“Private pool” is a useful filter, but it does not answer the questions that determine whether a pool will suit a particular stay. Before booking, confirm exclusive use, heating arrangements, barriers, access, dimensions, shade, maintenance and any rules that affect when the pool can be used.
The aim is not to find the longest feature list. It is to match the pool and surrounding space to the ages, mobility, supervision needs and daily rhythm of the group.
What does private actually mean?
Ask whether the pool is reserved exclusively for the booked accommodation or shared with another residence, complex or manager. Confirm whether maintenance staff may attend during the stay and whether any outdoor areas are overlooked or shared.
Photographs can establish appearance, but they do not confirm current privacy, access or operating arrangements. Request written clarification when exclusive use is central to the booking decision.
How does the heating work?
“Heated” can refer to different systems, schedules and operating limits. Ask whether heating is included, seasonal, manually controlled or subject to an additional fee. Confirm whether the host promises a setting, a target range or simply an operating heating system.
Water temperature can be affected by weather, equipment and operating conditions. Avoid treating one historic review or photograph as a guarantee. Ask how a heating fault would be handled and what remedy, if any, the booking terms provide.
What are the dimensions, depth and access points?
Wide-angle images can make scale difficult to judge. Request approximate length, width and depth if those details matter. Ask about steps, ladders, rails, ledges and the surface between the accommodation and pool.
For mobility needs, do not infer suitability from the existence of steps or a handrail. Request measurements, photographs and a description of thresholds, gradients and surfaces, then compare them with the traveller’s actual requirements.
How is the pool separated from living areas?
Queensland has laws and standards for pool barriers, registration and safety. The Queensland Government pool-safety hub and QBCC pool-safety standard explain the regulatory framework.
A compliant barrier does not replace active supervision. Ask where gates are located, how the accommodation opens towards the pool and which adults will be responsible when children or vulnerable swimmers are present.
What is available around the pool?
Check shade, seating, lighting, outdoor dining, towel arrangements and the route to a bathroom. If the group expects long pool days, the surrounding space may matter as much as the water.
Ask whether glass is prohibited, whether quiet hours apply and whether pool use is restricted at particular times. These details should come from the current house rules, not from assumptions about a private residence.
How are maintenance and interruptions handled?
Clarify the regular servicing schedule and whether staff may need access. Ask how water-quality concerns, equipment faults or severe weather are reported. If the pool is the main reason for booking, read the cancellation and compensation terms before payment.
On arrival, report any damaged barrier, faulty latch, water-quality concern or unsafe condition immediately. Do not attempt to adjust unfamiliar equipment unless the host has provided clear instructions.
Use a written pre-booking checklist
Record the answers to the questions that matter: exclusive use, heating, dimensions, barriers, access, shade, rules and fault response. Written confirmation reduces ambiguity and gives the group a shared understanding of what has been booked.
Then return to the broader accommodation decision. Bedrooms, bathrooms, location, shared living space and cancellation terms can still matter more than a single amenity. Our family accommodation guide puts those questions together.
What to verify on publication day
Queensland guidance and all property-specific pool wording should be rechecked on the day this guide is published. Pool operation, heating and house rules remain time-sensitive.
